I can't imagine how wickedly disturbing and sickening that scene might seem to someone who doesn't understand what is actually happening. Then the sacrament is created when they eat parts of the baby. Then fast forward to Jesus' birth, and humanity killing him. But then they come back even more the next time, there are plenty of wars, religions are born and our actual history starts. And then the humans are gone from the house for a while. It's all there, from the creation, to Adam, then from his side Eve (remember the wound on Ed Harris' side when he was puking over the toilet and in the next scene her wife showing up?) and then eating the apple (breaking the glass treasure), closing paradise (Bardem's office), Cain killing Abel, then the flood (when the guests brake the pipes and the house floods). It's insane that Aronofsky just went for this, knowing full well that only a small percentage will actually understand it, and as we can see it now, the rest pretty much just hates it. Like no wonder people can't make sense of it. Unless you were raised christian and know the basic stories of the old testament, because the Bible was read to you or you read it yourself, most of this movie will go over your head. Like a quarter of the reviews I read mentioned something about Biblical references, but most of those still didn't get the picture.Īnd you can't blame them. And then they just say, "oh, so obvious metaphors" and leave it at that. Obviously everybody understood that Jennifer Lawrence was mother nature, and a lot of them also that Javier Bardem is God.
